There are a couple ways that you can unintentionally corrupt the data on your microSD card. We will outline them in this post so you can avoid them, and then we will tell you how to fix your card if you make that mistake.
Actions to avoid:
- Removing the microSD card while recording
- Removing the microSD card while the camera is on
- Removing the microSD card while the camera is booting (wait for the beep, not the lights)
- Connecting the VholdR to your computer while it is booting (wait for the beep, not the lights)
Starting the camera while it is connected to your computer
Booting the camera with record switch in the record position
Keep in mind, these are all typical things to avoid with any external memory dependent device. However, we are working on a firmware update that will eliminate as many of these pitfalls as possible.
Symptoms:
Here’s how to tell if you’ve accidentally done one of the above. If you are trying to connect your VholdR to your computer and you find that it recognizes the device, but it doesn’t show a drive letter, then you’ve got an error.
The fix:
You’ll need a card reader, or another device that can mount microSD cards. If you don’t have one, they can be easily obtained at RadioShack for a very low price (or you can wait out the firmware update).
- Once you have a card reader then you can plug the card into your computer.
- It should mount properly and you should see a drive letter.
- You can now click on the drive and download any videos that may be on there.
- Once you have cleared off the card then right click on the letter and select format.
- Use the settings pictured below and then click start.
Format screen
Once the drive is reformatted. Insert is back into your VholdR (when it is off) then power it back up (being careful to avoid the pitfalls listed above) wait for the beep and then you should be back in business.
